Choosing a cow for milk production

A balanced and responsible choice of cow milk is no less important, since the amount of dairy product will depend on it. How not to make a mistake in choosing and why is it necessary to pay attention to certain points? Let's highlight the main points of the right choice:

  • legs. The cow must have strong limbs, it is advisable to check the gait of the cow; an even and confident step is an indicator of a good cow;
  • udder. A large udder can ensure good milk production, the presence of visible large veins is excellent;
  • belly. A saggy belly is an indicator of careless, sloppy, improper care of the animal;
  • breast. Definitely deep and wide. A significant sagging of the breasts by 15-25 cm is a good reason to refuse the purchase;
  • tail. Its base must be thin. If the base of the tail is wide, then this is an indicator of poor physique of the cow;
  • head. The skull of a milk cow is elongated all the time, and thin and small horns are also a big plus;
  • ribs The intercostal distance indicates the state of the respiratory system. A small arrangement of the ribs among themselves indicates underdeveloped lungs.

When choosing, you need to pay attention to the age of the animal; a very old cow is unlikely to please you with significant milk yield. Milk production decreases significantly after 10-12 calvings.

How was the breed created?

The first mention of the Dutch appeared in the 18th century, and they were named after their habitat. At the moment, the breed is not limited to one subspecies, and the most productive animals are called Friesians.

Thanks to excellent heredity, cows from generation to generation retain high productive qualities in terms of milk indicators. In addition, farms carry out a lot of work to select the best representatives for milk yield, which will be used for further breeding.

Over a long period of time, thanks to breeding work, representatives of the Dutch breed have changed significantly in appearance. Not so long ago, these were simply overdeveloped dairy animals with thin bones, a weak muscular system, delicate skin, and a soft constitution.

Today such cows are practically not found. The animals have a strong and dense constitution along with a massive body structure.

Origin

The first mentions of Dutch cows date back to the eighteenth century. The favorable climate and wide pastures of the country contributed to the development of the economy and the evolution of the breed. Already in the nineteenth century, the Germans became interested in cow cows, and they brought cattle to Germany for further breeding work. This is how the East Friesian breed appeared, and the Dutch became further widespread in Europe.

Dutch cows came to Russia thanks to Peter I. Since then, ongoing work to improve the breed has helped the animals gain a stronger muscular corset and thicker skin. At the same time, high milk yields remained, but now dairy products have become of higher quality, tasty, nutritious and fatty. And despite the dairy direction, animals are capable of producing high-quality meat.

Cows of the Dutch breed have a characteristic appearance for animals of this type. According to the main parameters, it is very similar to a Holstein cow.

Productivity type

The main productive direction of the Dutch variety is dairy . Thus, animals produce on average five to six tons of milk per year; there are also cases where cows brought up to eleven tons with good feeding. At the same time, the fat content of dairy products often exceeds four percent.

It is also worth noting the good characteristics of meat products. On average, cows weigh about five hundred to six hundred kilograms, bulls - eight hundred to nine hundred. The slaughter yield is up to sixty-five percent. The young animals are distinguished by their high growth rate and early maturity.

Appearance

Main external characteristics of livestock:

  • muscular torso;
  • strong limbs;
  • soft wool and elastic skin;
  • straight back;
  • refined, slightly elongated head;
  • cup-shaped udder with large cylindrical teats, suitable for manual and machine milking.

The color of the cows is black with a variegated tint.

Average milk yield

A cow can give milk for as many years as its owner gives it life. But the average milk yield varies greatly over the years. Let's consider how much milk an animal can produce per day, per month and per year.

How much milk can you get per day?

The highest percentage of milk production is observed in the period between calving and the subsequent pregnancy of the animal. The approximate figure in this case is close to 30 liters per day. Certain breeds can produce up to 70 liters per day.

In order not to make a mistake when choosing a good cow, you can determine the condition of the cow by its appearance, or more precisely: the condition of the skull (it should be small), the presence of powerful legs, an udder, a moderately protruding belly, and a not very humpbacked back.

How much milk does a cow produce per day in summer and winter? Many novice farmers are interested in the question of how many liters a cow produces at different times of the year, since the quality of feed has a direct impact on milk production. It should be noted that in the summer, cows are enriched with a significant amount of proteins and vitamins, so milk yield in the summer will be much higher. This is approximately 17-25 liters per day. In winter, the average milk yield is small - 9-12 liters.

But it is also necessary to take into account the calving time of the cow. If an animal gives birth in the fall, then there will be quite a lot of milk in winter. The correct daily diet is also important. In winter, in addition to straw and hay, succulent food that contains vitamins will be useful:

Average monthly milk yield

What indicator of milk yield per month can be easily determined by multiplying the average daily indicator by the number of days in a month. Moreover, it is necessary to take into account such factors as the conditions of keeping the cow and the climatic zone, as well as a specific month in the calendar year.

According to statistics, the highest milk yield of cow cows occurs in Israel due to the most favorable climate and attentive attitude of farmers to animals.

How much milk can you get in a year?

The most productive dairy producing countries include America, England and Israel. Their figures correspond to 9-15 thousand liters of milk annually per individual. The reason for this is the living conditions of animals and the diversity of breeds.
