Applications of creams and ointments for cow udders
All ointments and creams, depending on their functional purpose, can be divided into several groups: preventive drugs and compositions used for medicinal purposes.
To treat diseases
Most of these ointments contain only natural ingredients, so they are not dangerous either for the animal itself or for the person who drinks cow's milk. However, before talking about the safety of the chosen product, it is worth learning more about it. Here are some examples of popular mixtures for solving specific animal problems.
Papillomas and warts
Lekaseptal , which contains the following components, has long been considered a good solution to the problem of warts
- eucalyptus oil;
- nutmeg extract;
- cedar extract;
- menthol;
- laurel oil;
- chlorophyll.
When the product is applied to the skin, it becomes covered with a thin and greasy film, which protects it from drying out and harmful environmental factors.

The main indications in this case are:
- presence of warts;
- cracks in the udder and its swelling;
- burns;
- insect bites;
- lymphangitis and pereflibitis;
- bruises and hematomas.
After applying the drug, lekaseptal begins to effectively combat microorganisms present on the surface and significantly reduces their number, which leads to the rapid restoration of the skin.
The ointment can be used after milking, and then every four hours until the symptoms of the disease disappear. The applied ointment is rubbed well into the animal’s skin until it is completely absorbed.
Another example of good means for combating warts and papillomas is the famous “Salicylic ointment ,” which can also be used for daily udder care. It includes:
- salicylic acid;
- petrolatum.
Together, these components have an antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and local irritant effect, and also promote keratolytic processes.
The method of application does not differ from the use of other versions of similar products: a small amount of the product is simply rubbed into the affected areas 1-2 times a day, until the manifestations of the disease disappear or decrease. Important! Despite the safety level of the chosen ointment, you should not use it before milking the cow, which will help eliminate the possibility of it getting into the milk. Even if its components do not harm a person, they can negatively affect the taste of the resulting product.
Mastitis
Unfortunately, mastitis in cows is not uncommon and, compared to warts, causes much more discomfort in the animal. Of course, you won’t be able to eliminate the problem with ointments or creams alone, but they can be an excellent addition to the treatment prescribed by your doctor. Let's look at several popular varieties of such products.
Cream "Mastisept". It is used as an anti-inflammatory, anesthetic and warming drug that helps restore the skin in its deep layers in case of mastitis and bruises of the cow's udder. In combination with other medications, it can be used as an adjuvant for mastopathy and endometritis. The high efficiency of this product is due to its constituent components:
- camphor;
- methyl salicytate;
- black poplar leaf bud oil.
The cream is applied to the cleansed skin of the udder immediately after milking, performing this procedure several times a day for 3-5 days.
Important! The entire treatment period, while the drug is injected into the udder cavity, the milk from it is not suitable for human consumption. It must be periodically milked and disposed of.
Gel "Traumel S". It is characterized by a complex homeopathic effect on the body, providing anti-inflammatory, warming and anti-edematous effects, due to which the animal’s condition improves after the first use of the drug. The healing and analgesic effect of the composition is explained by the presence in it of such plant components as:
- mountain arnica;
- medicinal calendula;
- narrow-leaved echinacea;
- purple coneflower;
- pharmaceutical chamomile;
- medicinal comfrey;
- perennial daisy;
- medicinal belladonna;
- yarrow.
Just 15 minutes after applying the gel, they are all absorbed into the skin and, reaching the deep layers, effectively combat the problem. In addition to mastitis, this remedy is excellent for faster healing of abrasions, bruises, and eliminating the manifestations of arthritis and myositis. The gel is applied in a thin layer to the affected, cleaned area of the udder and lightly rubbed in. Regularity of use: 1-2 times a day. Due to its good tolerance, it can be used for a long time.
Instructions for use
The method of applying the cream depends on the tasks assigned to the person:
- For dry eczema, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, the cream can be used in its pure form or, according to doctor’s indications, mixed with ointments or creams based on glucocorticosteroids in a 1:2 ratio. Apply a thin layer to previously cleansed and dried skin; no bandages are used. Use 2-3 times a day until the condition improves.
- For the care of dry, normal or oily skin, as well as children's skin - up to 2-3 times a day on the driest flaky areas of the skin. Can also be used as a protective cream in bad weather, applying to the face, hands and other exposed areas before going outside.
- Anti-aging care . Apply once a day at night, the cream has a lifting effect, tightens the skin, and protects against moisture loss. Can be used in combination with other anti-aging facial products.
- For bedsores, use daily as needed, lubricating the damaged areas to soften them and speed up healing.
- The cream can be used in childhood as a “diaper” product and for treating skin folds. In this case, the treatment areas need to be washed, dried, lubricated with a thin layer of cream, and wait for absorption. If necessary, apply baby powder on top.
- In adolescence, it is used as an antiseptic and antibacterial agent to prevent acne, pimples, and other inflammations of the skin. You can apply it to the entire surface of the face or spot on pimples after pre-cleansing the skin with tonic, lotion or soap.
You can also use veterinary cream to relieve irritation and itching after insect bites.
The best companies of creams and ointments
Despite the effectiveness of the described compositions, not all farmers know about them, which cannot be said about such drugs as “Zorka”, “Burenka” and “Lyubava”. Both drugs are more often found in the first aid kits of farm animal owners than others, for which there are objective reasons.
"Zorka"
The effectiveness and popularity of this cream is explained by the influence of Floralizin present in its composition - a natural complex of biologically active components that contain antioxidants, coenzyme Q10, substances containing sulfur, polysaccharides and beneficial enzymes:
- beta-glucan;
- vitamins of group B, as well as A, D, E;
- carotenoids;
- biotin.
Thanks to its rich composition, “Zorka” not only softens the skin well, but also has a therapeutic and preventive effect: promotes skin regeneration, relieves inflammation, tones and protects the skin.
Before applying the cream, it is advisable to wash and dry the udder and nipples, then spread about 5 g of the drug on it in a thin layer (1 for each nipple and 1 g for the area between them). Increasing the elasticity and firmness of the animal's skin has a positive effect on its behavior, which greatly facilitates the task of milking.
Important! The product does not cause allergic reactions in the animal and does not in any way affect the physico-chemical or any other parameters of milk, therefore it can be used on a regular basis as a prophylactic agent.
"Burenka"
Like the previous product, “Burenka” ointment has an antiseptic, keratolytic, softening and anti-inflammatory effect on the skin of the udder, due to which it is protected from chapping, exposure to sunlight, cracks, diaper rash and abrasions due to frequent milking of the animal (including mechanical way). This drug contains such useful components as:
- mineral oils;
- glycerol;
- paraffin;
- ceresin
With regular use of the ointment, it not only prevents drying out, but also significantly reduces the likelihood of mastitis developing in the cow.
True, in order to achieve maximum effectiveness, the use of the composition must be regular: preferably after each milking (1-2 g of ointment is applied to all nipples with light massaging movements). No contraindications or side effects from the use of Buryonka have been recorded. Also, this ointment does not affect the quality of milk. Find out how to choose the right cow.
"Lyubava"
Unlike the previous ones, this product is used not only to care for the skin of the udder, but also to soften the skin of a person’s hands, and not necessarily during the milking process. The product contains only natural substances, the most famous of which are the following:
- almond, palm, soybean and shea butter;
- extracts of calendula, chamomile and horse chestnut;
- collagen hydrolyzate;
- emulsion wax.
The combination of knowledge in the field of veterinary medicine and cosmetology has made it possible to obtain an excellent emollient that effectively eliminates dry skin and increases its elasticity.
In addition, when used in livestock farming, Lyubava helps to avoid burns to the udder of cattle and reduces itching after insect bites. The natural components of the cream allow it to be used both after and before milking, because it does not have any negative effect on the composition and smell of milk. Of course, before applying the cream, you should wash the udder and dry it with a clean towel. The remaining cream after rubbing is removed with a paper napkin.
Benefit
Any cream that is applied to a cow's breast makes the skin soft. At the same time, without affecting the quality of milk. The cow's nipples become softer, microdamages heal. By moisturizing the udder, the ointment covers the teats with a protective film, but at the same time prevents bacteria from entering the cow’s body.
When the skin hardens too much, it can burst, and bleeding is also possible; timely applied ointment will soften the udder and nipples, exfoliate the keratinized epidermis, and at the same time prevent the cow’s suffering.
Advice: If a cow is bitten by an insect, the affected areas should be lubricated with an udder care product, then there will be no itching, irritation or redness.
Massaging the cow's breasts with cream will be more effective than doing them on dry breasts, improving milk flow and facilitating maximum milk production by the cow.
How to make homemade ointment for udder skin care
As you can see, there are a lot of products on the market designed to care for the udder of a cow, but if you want to save money, or you simply don’t have the opportunity to look for a suitable composition, you can prepare the necessary ointment yourself. There are many recipes for making such a product and here are a few of them.
We advise you to read why a cow produces less milk after calving.
Required components
If you just need to soften the cow’s skin and there are no problem areas on the udder, then the following components will help maintain its healthy condition:
- sunflower oil - 150 g;
- beeswax - 50 g;
- paraffin - 50 g.
However, if there are minor skin lesions, vegetable oil will no longer help, and other components will be needed. So, to prepare a regenerating agent, it is better to take:
- petrolatum;
- boric acid;
- salicylic acid;
- novocaine.
In this case, for 100 g of Vaseline you will need 10 g of the other ingredients, although novocaine may be less - 5 g.
Step-by-step cooking instructions
In both cases, the process of preparing homemade ointment is not particularly labor intensive and will not take much time. A sunflower oil-based emollient is prepared according to the following plan:
- Pour the oil into a glass and place in a water bath, bring to a boil.
- Grind beeswax and paraffin.
- Add them to the boiling oil and wait until they completely dissolve in it.
- Remove the oil from the heat and cool it.
- After this, the ointment can be considered ready for use.

Preparing the second remedy is even easier. You just need to mix all the ingredients together until a homogeneous mixture is formed.
Directions for use and doses
Homemade softening ointment with oil is applied to the cow’s clean and dry udder every time after milking, up to three times a day. The regenerating composition is used twice a day, rubbing it well into cracks and scratches on the surface of the skin half an hour before milking the cow.
Do you know “Petroleum Jelly”, also known as “Vaseline”, appeared back in 1859, and its creator is considered to be Robert Chesbrough, a chemist from England. Today, the main components of the product are mineral oils and solid paraffin hydrocarbons.
Whatever product you choose, the main thing is its regular use, which will prevent the occurrence of udder skin problems or prevent their further development. Pharmaceutical preparations are easier to use and store, but homemade ointments also have their advantages, so the choice is yours.
Making homemade ointments
You can prepare a product for caring for a cow's udder yourself. For the nourishing cream you will need:
- vegetable oil (olive, sunflower) - 75 grams;
- natural beeswax - 25 grams;
- paraffin - 25 grams.
The oil should be boiled in a water bath, add the remaining ingredients, stir until completely dissolved and cool.
The therapeutic anti-inflammatory and analgesic agent is prepared as follows:
- Take 100 grams of Vaseline and heat it slightly.
- Add 10 grams of salicylic and boric acid.
- 2-5 grams of novocaine.
Everything should be mixed thoroughly. Proper care of a cow's udder will protect the animal from disease, increase productivity and make milking easier. The use of the cream will also help keep the milkmaid's hands well-groomed and soft.
User reviews from the network
It is with great pleasure that I would like to leave my review of Burenka’s udder ointment. I have 2 cows on my personal farm, I have been using this ointment for several months now, so I will write a review based on my own experience. I look after the udders of my cows very carefully. How else? After all, there is also milk for my children, and in order to prevent harmful substances from getting into the milk, I use only ointments made from natural ingredients. Burenka is exactly such an ointment. It perfectly nourishes the skin of the udder, after application the udder is much softer, the skin on it is smooth and elastic. I apply the cow after each milking, take a little ointment in my hand and rub the udder evenly. This cream also protects the skin of the udder well in winter and summer. In summer and winter, the udder especially suffers from the harmful effects of the environment, but with Burenka, the skin of the udder is not afraid of heat, wind, or cold.

Use during pregnancy
The cream used in veterinary medicine does not harm humans, including women during lactation and pregnancy. On the contrary, it is used during this period for the following purposes:
- for the skin of the face and body - softening, eliminating itching, flaking, dryness, maintaining the water-lipid balance of the epidermis;
- prevention of stretch marks on the buttocks, abdomen, chest;
- healing and prevention of cracks in the nipples after feeding.
The Floralizin complex, which is the basis of this product, is a balanced natural set of biologically active components that have no analogues. It contains no chemicals, hormones, alcohol, fragrances, or artificial preservatives that could harm the growing fetus.
If the cream is used to heal cracks and wounds on the nipples , at least 1–1.5 hours should pass after treatment and before the next feeding for the product to be absorbed. If feeding is necessary earlier, it is recommended to remove excess cream from the breast by washing or wet wipes. But even if a small amount enters the child’s digestive tract from the skin of the breast, there are no side effects.

Conducted studies by domestic and foreign scientists have demonstrated that udder hygiene before and after milking significantly improves the quality of milk and the health of cattle. For this purpose, the experiment involved cows, which were divided into two groups: experimental and control. The udders of the animals of the first group were regularly processed. At the end of the experiment, it turned out that the cows from the experimental group significantly improved the quality of their milk yield.
You can more clearly understand the advantage of udder treatment by comparing the characteristics.
