Signs of postpartum paresis.

Postpartum paresis most often appears within 12-72 hours after birth, but in some cases it can appear later, after 2 weeks or a month. The course of the disease is rapid, the first signs turn into an advanced form within a few hours.

First signs:

  • The cow loses her appetite
  • no chewing gum
  • the cow shifts from foot to foot as if it is very unpleasant for her to stand,

  • the body trembles, the muscles tense and relax.

Signs of an advanced form:

  • The cow's body temperature decreases and she feels cold to the touch. When measuring the temperature rectally (inside the anus), a decrease in temperature to 36-35 degrees is determined (in normal conditions, the rectal body temperature in cows is 38-39 degrees).
  • There is no urination or excretion of feces, which is a sign of stopping the functioning of the digestive system and atony of the proventriculus,
  • The gait becomes unsteady, the cow stops for each step, as if choosing which leg she can take a step from,
  • At some point, the neck may bend in an s-shape and lie on the chest,
  • Later the cow falls on her side and cannot get up,

Etiology of development of paresis

The cause of postpartum paresis is primarily considered to be unbalanced feeding . Insufficiency of calcium and phosphorus is associated with their increased consumption for fetal growth in the last months of pregnancy. Their losses are partially compensated by the leaching of microelements from the bones and other depots of the cow. But in animals with high productivity, the consumption of these elements is also high during the lactation period, so the disease primarily manifests itself in Holstein, Black-and-White and other dairy breeds.

The second point in the development of paresis is sugar deficiency. At the moment of calving, the work of the endocrine glands intensifies. The pancreas releases an excess amount of insulin into the blood, leading to a decrease in glucose levels up to 5 or more times compared to the normal state.

Thirdly, the central nervous system is inhibited (probably the reasons are related to the previous two). Impaired reactivity of the brain apparatus contributes to the development of paralysis in the cow.

V. Destruction of personal data

The user's personal data is destroyed when:

— the User’s own deletion of data from his personal page using the “delete account” functionality available to the User using profile settings; — removal by the Operator of information posted by the User, as well as the User’s personal page in cases established by the purchase and sale agreement (offer); — when the subject of personal data withdraws consent to the processing of personal data.

Conclusions, generalizations, forecast

Postpartum paresis is often observed in highly productive dairy cows or in older cows. Manifestations of the disease in young heifers are extremely rare. The main reasons for the development of the disease lie in poor nutrition and care of the animal.

Characteristic symptoms are observed most often in the first three days after calving, very rarely - after a couple of months. If you do not provide assistance to the animal in time, after the first manifestations the stage of paralysis begins, when the animal falls to the side with its head thrown back. It is quite difficult to get a cow out of this state. In 70% of cases, without therapy the animal dies. After the first manifestations of the disease, you cannot waste a minute and, if you need to wait a very long time for a veterinarian, you need to start acting on your own.

Treatment of labor paresis includes a complex of various measures. The main thing is to remember that it is strictly forbidden to give the cow any medications by mouth, otherwise they may get into the trachea and then the consequences cannot be avoided. Today, on the Internet, you can watch a video “treatment of paresis in a cow,” which will tell you in detail how to properly provide first aid to a sick animal and prevent the development of the disease.

If all the manipulations are done in time, the female will be on her feet within a couple of hours and will feel a significant improvement. In most cases, the prognosis is quite favorable. The disease can be cured without harm to the animal. However, do not forget that preventing it will be much easier than curing it. Simple prevention and appropriate care are the key to good pet health.
